In today’s competitive market, ensuring quality and reliability in products and services is paramount. One way to achieve this is through NVLAP accreditation. But what exactly is NVLAP, and why should you care if a company is accredited? Let’s dive in.
What is NVLAP?
The National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) is administered by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). NVLAP provides third-party accreditation to testing and calibration laboratories based on internationally recognized standards, ensuring that the laboratories maintain high levels of competence and quality.
Requirements for NVLAP Accreditation
NVLAP (Ionizing Radiation Dosimetry) accreditation program is designed to satisfy the requirements for processing personnel dosimeters (whole body badges and extremity badges) to determine the dose of record for the occupational worker. Accreditation is available to any dosimetry processor. It is required by regulation that licensees of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission have personnel dosimeters processed by a NVLAP-accredited processor.
For information on the requirements of accreditation, see NIST Handbook 150, which contains the requirements that are the basis for accreditation of any laboratory regardless of the discipline or area for which a lab seeks accreditation. In addition, ionizing radiation dosimetry processors must meet the program-specific requirements in NIST Handbook 150-4, NVLAP Ionizing Radiation Dosimetry.
1. Application for NVLAP Accreditation
1.1 The application process begins when the NVLAP program manager notifies the participant that it is necessary to participate in the next NVLAP testing session and provides a web link to the electronic application. In general, the accreditation process is performed every 2 years.
1.2 Application is completed online and includes the following information:
- Full legal Company Name & address
- NVLAP Laboratory Code
- Identification of the dosimeters that will be tested. Note: These dosimeters must be identical to the dosimeters that will be used as the dosimeter of record after accreditation is granted.
- Testing categories requested as per ANSI N13.11 (current version)
1.3 Provide participation fee through online portal when requested.
2. Performance Testing
2.1 For dosimeter types in routine use, the dosimeters, hangers (badge cases), and processing techniques used for proficiency testing must be selected from the stock in use for personnel monitoring.
2.2 A total of 15 dosimeters (21 for category II) of each model will be used in each category in which testing is desired. Shipping controls & extra dosimeters are also provided.
2.3 Dosimeters are assembled, labeled and then sent to the testing lab.
2.4 Once dosimeters are irradiated by the testing lab then they are sent back to the participant to be processed and dose results determined.
2.5 The reader used for processing must meet all routine requirements for cleanliness, heating cycle, and reader calibration.
2.6 All calculations must be done using routine dose processing protocols.
2.7 The results shall be reported in accordance with the schedule provided by NVLAP or the proficiency testing lab.
2.8 Steps 2.1 thru 2.7 are repeated three times over the course of three months.
2.9 After all the dose results are provided by the participant to NVLAP then the proficiency test results are provided to the participant for each category tested. The participant will either Pass or Fail.
2.10 The participant is required to pass all testing categories prior to the onsite assessment.
3. Onsite Assessment
3.1 NVLAP assessors come onsite to review laboratory documentation, including the management system, quality policies, equipment and maintenance records, record-keeping procedures, testing procedures, laboratory test records and reports, personnel competency records, personnel training plans and records, and safeguards for the protection of sensitive and proprietary information.
3.2 The NIST Handbook 150 Checklist and the NIST Handbook 150-4 checklist are used by the assessor when performing the on-site assessment. In addition, NVLAP Lab Bulletins may be issued to expand the requirements or to provide clarity on existing requirements..
3.3 When the onsite assessment has been completed the NVLAP assessor compiles an assessment report which will include comments and findings.
3.4 Within 30 days from the date of the on-site assessment the participant must address all nonconformities and provide a written response to NVLAP.
4. Accreditation Granted
When the participant has successfully completed the Performance Testing and Onsite Assessment then Accreditation will be granted.
Each accreditation cycle is normally 2 years and then must be retaken.
Why NVLAP Accreditation is Important
NVLAP accreditation is crucial as it ensures that a laboratory meets rigorous international standards for quality and technical competence. Working with NVLAP-accredited labs guarantees adherence to best practices and continuous quality improvement.
- Assurance of Quality and Competence: NVLAP accreditation provides assurance that a laboratory meets stringent quality and technical standards. This means the lab is competent to perform specific tests and calibrations accurately.
- International Recognition: NVLAP accreditation is recognized globally, providing an advantage for labs operating in international markets. It demonstrates a commitment to maintaining high standards, which can enhance a lab’s reputation and credibility.
- Regulatory Compliance: Many industries and regulatory bodies require NVLAP accreditation as a condition for performing certain tests or calibrations. Working with an accredited lab ensures compliance with these regulations, reducing the risk of non-conformance and potential penalties.
- Customer Confidence: Clients and customers are more likely to trust and choose a company that works with NVLAP-accredited labs. This trust can translate into increased business opportunities and customer loyalty.
- Continuous Improvement: The annual renewal process for NVLAP accreditation encourages labs to improve their processes and maintain high-quality standards continuously.
NVLAP accreditation is a mark of excellence for testing and calibration laboratories. It assures clients and customers of a lab’s competence and adherence to international standards. For companies, working with NVLAP-accredited labs like PL Medical means partnering with trusted, reliable experts committed to delivering accurate and high-quality results. Whether you are a lab seeking accreditation or a business looking for reliable testing services, NVLAP accreditation is crucial.
